UK Adopts 101 Local Non-Emergency Telephone Number

Within the UK, the telephone number 101 has now been rolled out nationally for non-emergency police services.   There are therefore two main numbers for the Police: 999 for emergency calls and 101 for non-emergency police calls, for example to report a crime.

It is therefore important that IT Directors ensure their telephone systems are updated to allow the routing of 999, 112 and 101.  112 is the European standard for emergency services and is required to be routed in the UK.

Historically, many organisations have barred calls to all numbers starting with a 1.  This has stopped staff accessing unauthorised services such as the ability to withhold a calling line identify.  It is important that any bar on dialling 112 and 101 is now removed.
