At the end of December 2011, Microsoft released a client version of their popular Lync Unified Communications (UC) tool which operates on mobile platforms including Android, Apple iOS and Windows Phone. The client is designed to operate on both smart phone and tablet form factors and adapts is functionality and size accordingly. BBW have now completed our initial testing of the new client on the iPhone, iPad and Android platforms.
Overall Lync works very efficiently on these platforms and provides a new level of interaction with colleagues. The level of functionality is surprisingly strong and we didn’t experience any performance or stability problems. Both presence and instant messaging (IM) worked very well.
This first release of the client does have some limitations, the largest of which is its inability to directly handle voice. In addition, we noted some impact on battery life, if the Lync client was used extensively.
This is a strong first release and well worth installing for existing Lync users.
The promised integration with Skype could provide Microsoft with a very compelling solution.
