The End of VoIP?

It was over 10 years ago that Cisco completely disrupted the slow, traditional telephony market.  TDM had been around for years, was highly reliable and well proven.  Most of the incumbent manufacturers didn’t see Cisco as a risk and spoke arrogantly about Cisco Call Manager.  Ten years on and many of the companies who dominated the market such as Nortel, Philips and Ericson are no longer around and Cisco have around 40% market share.

Is history about to repeat itself?  BBW’s clients are actively moving to a wide range of alternatives to VoIP as a telephony solution.  Choices include: i) Moving everyone to mobile, ii) Skype, iii) Microsoft Lync and a myriad of hosted, cloud and hybrid solutions.

What’s interesting is that today’s incumbents are making the same sort of disparaging remarks as their predecessors did ten years ago.  Given the speed of change, often driven by cost saving, and the financial position of a number of major manufactures, 2012 could be a difficult year for VoIP.
